It started with "Smirking Jesus". Three years ago, as we drove past the National Museum, the visage of a haughty-looking Christ on a speeding jeep amused us so much that we have searched for his cheeky mug since. What was initially a tickled fascination became a long-term obsession with preserving this often for granted aspect of Philippine folk art.
The ProjectTogether with Tahanan Books, Manila-based graphic design studio Electrolychee is creating a 160-page full-color book on religious jeepney vinyl sticker art entitled "Biyaheng Langit".
It will be filled with 100+ photos of colorful, hand-rendered jeepney graphics we have amassed during our travels around Metro Manila and its nearby provinces these past three years. The book will also contain interviews with unsung jeepney sticker artists, salty PUJ drivers, and versed literati on religious iconography.
Only the most graphic, outrageous, and surreal jeepney images celebrating Filipino masa art from our personal photo bank will be showcased.
Why We Need Your Help
"Biyaheng Langit" will be published in August 2013, but we still need to raise at least Php 50,000 to alleviate the high cost of printing and to make the book more accessible to purveyors of Philippine art just like you.
Your donation (regardless of how big or small) will help save an important piece of Filipino art history. You will also receive exclusive gifts from Tahanan Books and Electrolychee as a sincere thank you for your contribution.
Sakay na! Also like our Facebook page for our latest "Biyaheng Langit" adventures.
Maraming salamat po.
